Viewing Grief with a Strengths Perspective

The predominant understanding of grief resulting from the death of a loved one, is based on models that tend to view the grief process from a problem-oriented perspective. The strengths-based framework of grief builds on previous models of grief with an added lens that emphasizes the health-producing aspects that are intrinsic to the mourner, as well as the process of grief. Participants will learn how a focus on client strengths rather than deficits provides the practitioner with valuable tools that can aid in grief assessment and intervention.

     LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
               1. Participants will understand grief from a strengths-based
                    perspective.
               2. Participants will learn to identify and utilize individual and
environmental strengths as aids in grief assessment and
                    intervention.
               3. Participants will learn to identify life-enhancing and life-                    depleting
grief reactions and their respective roles in the
                    grief process.
